You'll need:

  • embroidery floss in two colors: twice 2 yards for main, and once 2 yards for the tiny hearts
  • scissors
  • tape or clipboard

DIY Heart Friendship Bracelet - STEPS

Step 1 - Prepare Your Threads

Pink and white embroidery floss strands tied in a loop.
  1. Cut 2 strands of main (pink) and 1 strand of 'heart' color (white), each about 2 yards long.
  2. Bring all 3 threads together and fold them in half.
  3. Tie the fold in a knot, leaving half an inch of slack for tying the bracelet later.
  4. Secure the knot to a flat surface using tape or clip it onto a clipboard.

Step 2 - Arrange the Threads

Four pink and white embroidery floss strands clipped to a flat surface, separated into a mirror-image pattern.
  1. Separate the strands and arrange them into two sets, with the 2 strands of the white color (for the hearts) on each side between the main-color strands.

Step 3 - Begin with the Chevron Pattern (Chevron Row 1)

Left Side: Forward Knots

  1. Take the outermost strand on the left (pink) and make a forward knot over the second strand (white).
    • Create a 4-shape over the second strand, loop it under, and back through the opening.
    • Pull up to tighten.
    • Always make the knot twice.
  2. Continue: make 2 forward knots over the remaining pink strand toward the middle. This way, the outermost strand will reach the center.

Right Side: Backward Knots

  1. Take the outermost strand on the right (pink) and make a backward knot over the second strand (white).
    • Create a reverse 4-shape, loop it under, and back through the opening.
    • Pull up and to the left to tighten.
    • Always make the knot twice.
  2. Continue: make 2 backwards knots over the remaining pink strand toward the middle. This way, the outermost strand will reach the center.

Connect the 2 Center Strands

  1. Tie a knot with the two center strands to connect the left and right sides of the chevron row. Twice. This is the first chevron row you have now, all pink. The two white strands are on the outside:

Step 4 - Create the Heart Pattern (Special Row 2)

Left Side: 2 Backwards Knots, then forth

On the left side, take the 2nd outermost strand (pink) and make a backward knot over the outermost strand (white). Knot twice.

Now, take the white strand and make a forwards knot - towards the center. Knot twice.

Right Side: 2 Forwards Knots, then backwards

Repeat on the right side, mirrored: take the 2nd to last strand (pink) and make a forward knot over the outermost strand (white). Knot twice. ↓↓

Step 5 - Chevron Row (Row 3)

Complete one normal chevron row with the outermost pink thread - you'll create forward knots from the left to the center, and backwards knots from the right side towards the center. Tie a knot with the two center strands to connect the left and right sides of the chevron row. Twice.

Step 6 - Repeat Steps 4 and 5

Alternate between 1 normal chevron row and 1 special row to continue forming tiny hearts.

Repeat this sequence until the bracelet is long enough to fit around the wrist.

    Top Tip 1

For easier knotting, reposition the clip closer to the unfinished section of the bracelet as you work. The closer it is, the smoother the process!

Step 7 - Finish the Bracelet

A completed heart-patterned friendship bracelet with twisted ties at the ends, featuring a neat loop for closure and a vibrant pink and white design.
    1. Secure the pattern by tying a large knot at the end of the bracelet, or divide the strands in half and create two simple three-strand braids, each about 4 inches long. Finish by tying a knot at the end of each braid.
    2. Trim the excess thread, leaving enough for tying the bracelet around the wrist.

    Top Tip 2

a yard of diy twisted cord made from single-strand embroidery thread.

Want to create super neat, tight ends? You can twist them! Here's how to make twisted cord - perfect for finishing friendship bracelets with a neat, durable closure.

    Conclusion

Voila! Your heart-patterned friendship bracelet is complete. This beautiful design is a thoughtful gift or a fun way to practice your knotting skills. It's so much fun to experiment with different colors or adding embellishments like charms. Give it a try!❤️
