See how to tie a larks head knot - in seconds!

Larks head knots are some of the most frequently used knots in macrame. You'll use them when you start a macrame and need to attach the rope to the dowel, or a ring. You'll nearly always start with a lark's head knot.

But fear not, it's super simple, and you can use it right away on this cute gnome craft!

When I was a kid, macrame was something I enjoyed so much! I was lucky to be able to take part in a macrame class when I was nine, and together with a few other enthusiastic kids we'd try out every knot our teacher showed us. So much fun! (Made my first owl-shaped wall hanging there! Oh the eighties 🙂

The first thing our teacher told us was that every project would start the same way in her class - with this graciously easy knot. So let's see how to tie this hitch knot:

More About Larks Head Knot

What is another name for a larks knot?

Another name for this knot is the cow hitch. Ever heard about it?

A lark's knot is a hitch knot used to attach a rope to an object. You'll notice a horizontal segment made by the fold, resting just below the holding cords - this part is called the head. Good-to-know, so you're not confused when you read the word in a macrame pattern.

What is a Reverse Larks Head Knot?

Simple. The reverse larks head knot is the back of the standard larks head knot. See this one?

The head is facing backward, so you only see the back of the knot.

How to make a reverse larks head knot: You start this one by simply pushing the fold of the working cord upwards behind the dowel, not downwards. The rest is the same - just pull the two ends through the fold.
